About the Site

WHY THIS SITE, NOW?
Hi there! Thanks for joining us. We hope you are having a good time checking out this site and playing the games. We created this site for YOU—girls, parents, family member, teachers, people who care about the lives of your girls. The site was developed as a part of the film project, GOING ON 13. GOING ON 13 is a documentary that follows the lives of 4 pre-teen girls of color as they become young women.

Here’s a brief description of the film:

Four girls, four years, and the change of a lifetime. Meet Ariana, Isha, Rosie and Esme as they let go of childhood and fumble – or sprint – towards an uncertain future. This is puberty and for each of these girls of color, it’s a whirlwind of change and new choices. GOING ON 13 follows the girls at school, with family & friends, and as they discover more about who they are.

This site is a companion to the film to get girls exploring the issues of growing up, beyond the “body” of puberty and into their hearts and minds. Puberty is about so much more then menstruation and physical changes. We hope our film and this website share a glimpse of the complexity of puberty for girls with you.

THANK YOU!!

The wesbite was created by the digital genius of Michelle Halsell of Halsell New Media and Missing Pixel. Without her guidance, creativity, team of genius elves, and commitment we could NEVER have made this site happen. We are grateful to her for her commitment to girls across the USA and to making our ideas into realities! Thank you Michelle!

We worked with some amazing staff and girls at Girls Inc of Alameda County (http://www.girlsinc-alameda.org/programs). We could never have achieved our goals without the help of Linda Boessenecker, Judy Glenn, Kiku Johnson, Mariela Donis and her staff, Jenny Noyce, our interns Katarina Aiken and Frances Fu, the girls at the ASEND School in Oakland and the girls of the EUREKA! 2009 summer program. Their input and assistance helped make sure that the site was real, fun, and addressed the wants and needs of pre-teen and young teen girls. We can’t thank you enough.

Another group we want to thank are our funders and people who inspired us to make this site happen: the awesome ladies of Chicken and Egg Films—Julie, Wendy and Judith—we are eternally grateful; the Fledgling Fund—you believed in us; the Robeson Fund—you make us stay true to our goals of social change; and Wendy Levy, Ken Ikeda and Robert Collins of BAVC—the music by BUMP Records and Ryah Nikole is jamming and you helped us meet Michelle! We love you for that!
